Why matched texture is mostly sampling
Texture is not one setting. The pattern depends on mud consistency, tip size, air pressure, distance, and how long the knockdown sits before it is flattened — and the wall you are matching was sprayed by someone else, years ago, with their own version of all five.
So we sample. Scrap board, several passes at different settings, held up against the existing wall under that room’s own light until one of them disappears. Then that setting goes on the wall. Skipping the sampling step is why most patch repairs stay visible.
What we apply
- 01 Orange peel, knockdown and skip trowel, sprayed or hand-applied
- 02 Matching into an existing texture so a patch stops being locatable
- 03 Popcorn ceiling removal and refinish, smooth or re-textured
- 04 Whole-room retexture where a partial match would always read
Sample, check, then spray
The order matters. Everything gets proven on scrap before anything is committed to the wall.
Read the wall
Work out what is actually on there — pattern, scale, and whether it was sprayed, rolled or hand-worked.
Sample
Several settings on scrap, dried, then held against the wall under the room’s own light. One of them wins.
Apply
The winning setting sprayed or trowelled onto the wall, then knocked down on the same timing as the sample.
