Skim coating & Level 5 finishes

A Level 5 wall is the one nobody comments on. Under raking window light, a low-angle downlight or a large sheet of glass, every joint, fastener and tool mark that a Level 4 wall hides will read — so the whole surface gets skimmed, not just the seams.

Where it matters

Where a Level 5 actually earns its cost

Not every wall needs one. Level 4 is the right call for most painted walls with an eggshell or matte sheen and ordinary lighting — specifying Level 5 there is money spent on a difference nobody will see.

It earns its cost where light is critical or sheen is high: glazed walls and window returns, open-plan rooms with wide daylight, gloss and semi-gloss paint, dark saturated colours, and any wall a downlight grazes. Those conditions turn a fastener dimple into a shadow, and no amount of paint will bury it.

What the scope covers

  • 01 Full-surface skim over the whole wall or ceiling plane, not just taped joints
  • 02 Fastener spotting and bead work brought flush before the skim goes on
  • 03 Existing textured walls flattened back — orange peel and knockdown skimmed smooth
  • 04 Sanded, dusted and checked under a work light before it is called finished
The difference

What the light actually shows

Both walls are flat to the touch. The difference only appears when light travels along the surface rather than onto it — which is what a window, a wall-washer or a downlight near the wall all do.

RAKING LIGHT
Level 4 Joints and fasteners are filled and sanded flat. Under direct light it reads perfectly — under raking light, the compound over each joint takes light differently to the paper face beside it.
RAKING LIGHT
Level 5 A thin skim over the whole plane puts the same material everywhere, so there is no boundary for the light to find. This is what a gloss paint or a wall of glass needs.

Most walls do not need Level 5, and we will say so. It earns its cost where the light is critical or the sheen is high — not everywhere.

Method

How the coats go on

Compound shrinks as it dries. That single fact sets the coat count, the order and the timing — rushing a coat onto one that has not gone off is how a joint telegraphs back through three months later.

01

Tape & fill

Joints taped and filled, fasteners spotted, beads set. This is the Level 4 substrate — the skim is only ever as flat as what is under it.

02

Skim

A thin coat pulled across the entire surface, edge to edge, so joint compound and paper face take paint the same way.

03

Cut & light

Sanded flat, then read under a raking light from the angle the room will actually be lit. Anything that shadows gets another pass.
